In this burgeoning era of alternative health remedies and holistic healing, the mantra “death begins in the colon” has been embraced by a growing number of health-conscious individuals looking to increase both their life expectancy and standard of living. Perhaps even more impressive is that only low density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol decreased as a result of the treatment; triglycerides and high density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol levels were untouched. As defined by the American Heart Association on their website, LDL cholesterol “can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke can result.” The German study concluded that “psyllium husk preparations may be a therapeutic option for patients with mild to moderately elevated cholesterol levels.”
There are many different types of colon cleansing products and services, most of which do not involve or include the use of psyllium; services such as colonics and enemas, and colon cleanse products that do not contain psyllium fiber such as those based on herbs or oxygen, do not possess the ingredient that would duplicate the results of the study.
While there is not ample scientific evidence to determine the truth one way or another for many of the claimed benefits of colon cleansing, this study firmly supports some important benefits for at least a certain class of such products. There is also a vast and constantly growing group of loyal cleansing advocates who tout the subjective benefits of a cleansing, ranging from improved moods and energy levels, to reduced stomach size, weight loss and “feeling lighter” after a cleanse.
